Youth Surge
Anyone else sent their son / daughter off to fight?
I am now saying goodbye to my youngest son who will be deploying to Iraq as part of the troop surge. His big brother just got back earlier this year after 3 tours. I am proud of my sons (1 USMC, youngest is Army) but find it terribly difficult to send my boys off to war. I am a Marine myself, and would have gone in my day without question. I have spent all of my boys lives trying to teach them to be good, responsible adults, and have tried to protect them from lifes dangers until they were mature enough to handle them as men. Now the youngest is going, as did the oldest, to a place where I cannot do any of those things. I find this to be the most challenging and emotionally wrenching experience of my life. I know every generation has to send it's youth off to war, but now it's my turn and I have found it to be more difficult than I ever imagined. Comments?
Not every generation has to send their young to war. I mean there are people who have been lucky enough to serve their years in military during peacetime. I think right now its just a bit unlucky that the military has to be involved in a war. Furthermore, if you think about the situation in Iraq, the final objective to be achieved is a stable democracy. This objective can only be achieved if the Iraqi politicians from various factions (the Shiites, the Sunni and the Kurds) agree to reconcile and start acting responsibly. President Bush seems to think that somehow, political friendliness between the various factions of Iraq can be accomplished by putting more U.S. soldiers on the ground. I am very very sad for the troops that are reportedly dead in the news every day. I mean, some of the killed soldiers are merely 19 years old, probably just high school grads serving to pay their way through college after they come back. Unfortunately, today's new recruits have to suffer this unthinkable misery. I completely understand your frustration as a parent, and I wish your son a safe tour and come back alive and uninjured.
