The pleasure-first society...

Quickly, think of how you spent all of your awake time sitting yesterday. Most of it was probably dedicated to work, as most Americans work sit-down jobs. The rest of it might have been dedicated to television or family time. We've already discussed time (http://scalesonfire.blogspot.com/2009_08_05_archive.html) at great length, and the great determination then was the obvious one: there isn't any. So your time, however sparingly it may come, needs to be used productively. The problem with most is the mentality that, if all free time is dedicated to things that don't bring pleasure, then personal time should be dense with self-pleasure. After all, it's why these people claim to work in the first place: to fuel their many pleasures. What's left out of all of these lives is self-improvement, especially in and on the body.

One common characteristic amongst the self-pleasuring society is the desire to look like those people who give them pleasure, blindly admiring those who make time to do one more thing that most don't want to do. Self-pleasurers though, need to be pleased, and it is obviously pleasing to them to satisfy the thought of fitness in their heads.

They have gym memberships but do not go to gyms.

They own workout clothes and sneakers that they wear on the weekends for comfort and that have never been touched by sweat.

They'll wear anything to appear thinner and ingest anything that will make them thinner, regardless of the look, discomfort, or health risk.

They find more importance in things that they'd admit aren't important, but continuously take priority over their own bodies.

To tell the truth, there are a few groups of people in America who are bonafide hypocrites like this one, but the touchy and sensitive nature of weight loss and dieting changes things. These people, aside from bringing themselves bodily harm, harm the relationships around them by not ever accepting the reality of their bodies, and they take the time to inconvenience everyone around them in attempts to put on appearances and quiet any doubters. Meaning, they usually use others' time to work out, use large dinners as the time to force the stipulations of their diet upon those close to them. In short, they begin with the thought of others' impressions, and are satisfied when those people are satisfied. When exercise and proper eating are solely about you, and your time, whether it comes early in the morning or late at night, when your new diet is consistent for months, not a few strenuous days that are supposed to yield those five pesky pounds, then others will believe and understand your dedication. And by then, they won't matter to you one bit.

See if you can hold your plank today for longer than last week. Your fingers should be facing forward and spread out for balance, your head should be raised with the eyes forward, your shoulders relaxed. Both feet should be together with both big toes pressed firmly into the floor. With your arms extended, make a straight line between your shoulders and feet, tightening the abdomen, upper legs, lower back, hamstrings, gluteals, and keeping the arms strong. Try to hold the position straight for one and a half minutes twice, with ten seconds of rest in between. Focus, and keep your breath normal.
