How do you celebrate ur birthday on work?
In Russia if one of your workmate has birthday everybody who works with him or her donates some money and secretary buys the present and the birthday man or woman sets the party with wine, cakes and such kind of staff. What about your country?
Unfortunately,
There is usually no drinking at all at the professional work place in the U.S. (Too many aggressive lawyers here who try to take money from the company who gave the alcohol when the drunk person causes an accident trying to get home)
Sometimes, workers in the US might go out together to a club or a restaurant, but it's not the same fun times like you have in Russia where the boss gets completely drunk and falls onto the accountant while saying "Ya Tebya Uvazhauuuuu!"
Have you ever read the comic strip "Dilbert"?
For many places, it's exactly like this. Some secretarial person goes around collecting small amounts of money. Then something small and meaningless is purchased. Along with this, the birthday person is given a card which all the close (and maybe not-so-close) co-workers will sign their names and will also write either "Happy Birthday", "Good Luck" "Take Care" or some other similar trite and insipid message.
There is a cake in the meeting room and everyone eats cake for no more than 15 minutes, and smiles politely and then goes quickly to their own homes. There will be no singing.
In my office since I am "glavni direktor" we drink alcohol for birthdays and have pizza and "krilochki" delivered. But, I also demand that anyone who will be driving to take a test of the alcohol in their breath. Anybody who is over .02 alcohol level must accept a ride home.
You have better public transit in Russia -- taxi, avtobus, metro, etc, than we have in most places in America. Because of this, most American people must drive to get to work. The problem is then drinking and driving...
It's not illegal here to drink and then to drive. It's only illegal to be drunk and then to drive. The limit in USA, almost everywhere, is .08 grams of alcohol per 210 liters of breath. But, you know, it's better to be safe than to be giving money to aggressive American lawyers. ...That's what I say!
Also, when you are drunk the first thing to disappear is good judgment, so always you think you are more interesting, good looking and NOT drunk than you really are!
