Im Planning To Get Two Hamsters .. Would They Fight Alot ? Is It Okay To Put Them In The Same Cage ? HELP !!?

Okay , so im planning to get two dwarf hamsters (teddybear hamsters) . I want to get two so they dont feel lonely . Would it be okay to keep them in the same cage ? And is it better to get two males ? or two females ? The store im planning to get them at usually keep 2 in the same cage . Would it be best to get two that were in the same cage already ?

First off, dwarf hamsters and teddy-bear hamsters are two very different animals. Syrian hamsters (the larger breeds often called cutesy names like teddy-bear) are solitary animals and, while they may be fine for a while, are very likely to attack/kill any housemates. Dwarf hamsters, on the other hand, can be housed in small same-sex groups so long as the cage is large enough to accommodate them and you watch for any aggression, as they can attack/kill housemates as well.

If you're planning to buy a hamster cage, know that the typical cages are not big enough for even a single hamster. You may want to look into small-bar-gap cages intended for larger animals, like rats or chinchillas. The larger the better, as long as it is appropriate for the animal (bars too far apart will be easy for a hamster to escape from, for example), there is no such thing as 'too large' of a cage as long as there are enough hiding spots and food dishes to fill the area. You can also make a cage out of a regular old storage bin, with the middle of the lid cut out and covered with hardware cloth (a wire mesh). The staple diet for your hamster should be a high quality block, supplemented with vegetables/grains/meat every so often.

For the bedding, many people use paper-based products like Carefresh or similar brands. Also, aspen wood shavings and kiln dried pine work well (not regular pine!). Your hamster should have an appropriate wheel (do not buy the ones with single bars with large-ish gaps). They should always have toys, things to climb on, hide in, chew on. Popular choices are things like cardboard tubes (like toilet paper rolls) and apple tree sticks.

Be aware that if you do get two dwarf hamsters you will likely need two of everything in the cage to avoid territorial behaviour (ie: one hamster claiming the food dish and not allowing the other food).
