July - Blueberry Month
On May 8th in 1999, July was proclaimed National Blueberry month by the US Department of agriculture. Blueberries can grow in thirty-five out of fifty states where ninety percent of world's blueberries are harvested. Blueberries are enjoyed every day and in the Month of July are harvested at their ripest point. Blueberries are loved because of their sweet taste and ability to be made into about anything, some people even use blueberry air freshener!
Blueberries can be used in many different ways; they can be dried and ground, made into soups, stews, pies, cakes and more. For many centuries people have used blueberries to their advantage in medicines and foods. The Indians even had a special way to dry the blueberry and grind it so it can be used on meat as a spice rub. The Natives made blueberry teas and blueberry juices. It is believed that blueberries have the same effect that cranberries do; they purify the kidneys and stop infections in the urinary tract. Blueberry tea was often used to health sooth a woman during childbirth and stop a cough. Blueberries can also help you to live to an old age because they are rich in antioxidants. The antioxidants reduce your chance of getting cancer and heart disease. The blueberry also contains a significant amount of Vitamin E.
Blueberry month is to recognize the history of blueberries in America, even all the way back to the Native Americans. Grow blueberries in your own garden and reap the benefits. Be careful, though, because blueberries need a lot of attention. They need irrigation, pruning and being staked up along with a number of other things. Blueberries are the ripest and can be enjoyed even in the winter, if frozen. When you go to freeze blueberries, do not wash them or that will take some of the juices away and leave them watery when defrosted. Just think of all the possibilities of blueberries! Join in on National Blueberry Month in July and bake cakes, pies and tarts all blueberry sweet and good for you!
