Do Mormons really believe the Joseph Smith story to be legitimate?
like, do they think Joe was telling the truth?
I should think they do. After all, what person would willingly and knowingly put their faith in a lie? Trouble is, people on the inside seldom realise what's been going on (with regards to history) until they leave. Also, when you have devoted your entire life to a belief system, when all your family and friends share the same belief system, it can be almost impossible to break free - even if you came to realise in later years that you had been duped. It's not just investment in a religion, it's an emotional investment and who is brave enough to abandon their family, friends and entire life-style and strike out on their own?
I believe the most important non-religious hallmark of a cult has to do with control - control of information, control of thinking, control of emotions. Last year I came across a link that compares Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormons against Biblical Freedom - it is not examining theology but different control elements. It's only when you take an objective view of a denomination and start to do independent research that you will discover the truth behind the facade. Until that happens, adherents will cling to their beliefs and defend them.
