College essays - did you write a great one? Did you use a guide?
What book did you use? What did you write about?
I read a great sample once that was about how a high school senior's life paralleled that of his civil war anscestor (who was caught up in the war but ultimately became a doctor and university professor). It was really unique but told a lot about the student's abilities and enthusiasm.
What about you?
I have no idea how or why, but I didn't use any samples or books. I guess I was overly confident in my essay writing skills? lol.
The key is, as all the books hammer into you, to write something original and unique, and write it well. I was an exchange student my junior year of high school, and I knew statistically that there was maybe a 1% chance that I'd be competing against another applicant with the same experience, so I wrote about that, and it was an easy decision for me, once I thought of it. I was applying right after September 11 (literally - my English teacher set the due date for our essay drafts one week later, and I had major writer's block b/c everything was so terrible), and I knew everyone and their mother would be writing about its impact, etc, etc. It was hard, but I resisted doing what everyone else was because I knew, even though I could write a very passionate, effective essay, that I wouldn't stand out. Hopefully, I was the applicant whom the admissions officer went "Oh! that's the girl who lived in Germany for a year and had problems with her host family!" when my name came up in discussion, you know?
That sample does sound unique! I can see how that would be a very memorable, effective essay. Though I'm sure some schools would find it a bit pretentious 
So, yeah, rack your brain for something original, and barring that, write something cliche in a unique way!
