Is Chemically Treated Table Salt Affecting Your Health?
Salt is a dietary mineral composed primarily of sodium chloride that is essential for life. Salt for human consumption is produced in different forms: unrefined salt, refined salt (table salt), and iodized salt. Among the three, it is table salt that has been widely used. In fact, it is quite likely that you will find table salt in virtually all kitchens as it is a handy seasoning with just a pinch. However, overconsumption of table salt increases the risk for a number of health problems.
The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) and the American Medical Association (AMA) revealed that Americans are currently consuming higher amounts of sodium, up to 6,000 milligrams a day. This is quite alarming because the recommended daily allowance for sodium ranges from 500 to 2,000 milligrams per day. The high amounts of sodium, in a form that is harmful to the human body and with no concomitant mineral benefits, are what normally lead to serious health issues. The sodium that the CSPI and the AMA are pertaining to is the sodium found in table salt.
Table salt or refined salt has been chemically cleaned, purified and dried at an extreme temperature exceeding 648 degrees Celsius. The tremendous heat alters the natural chemical structure of the salt resulting into the multitude of health problems in the body. After the refining process, what remains is 97.5% sodium chloride and 2.5% chemicals including toxic iodine and fluorine as well as moisture absorbents. Moreover, table salt often contains a horde of preservatives dubiously omitted on the packaging. In most cases, aluminum hydroxide, calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate are added to enhance the pouring ability of table salt. Aluminum tends to deposit in brain tissue, making it a likely candidate for the development of Alzheimer's disease.
Table salt is an unnatural chemical form of salt that is recognized by the body as something foreign. It is present in almost every processed/preserved product that you consume. Our modern lifestyle has compounded the problem as we have been used to eating a lot of processed foods or food items loaded with preservatives. As such, the moment you add more salt to your already salted food, your body takes in more salt than it can excrete. Therefore, salt accumulates in the body and subsequently gets deposited in muscles and bony tissues. Table salt penetrates and hardens muscles, glands and blood vessels and forms exostoses such as arthritic growths, calculi and fibroids. It never becomes integral, useful parts of the body structure. In fact, table salt is more of a poison and in order for your body to metabolize table salt crystals, it has to sacrifice tremendous amounts of energy.
Sodium chloride from table salt tips the body’s fluid and electrolyte balance which can cause severe, even fatal, neurological problems. Excess salt also overburdens the body’s excretory systems, particularly the kidneys. As the body tries to resolve the overdose of salt, water molecules must cleave the sodium chloride to split them up into sodium and chloride ions to help the body to neutralize them. However, the process does not proceed without its repercussions because for every gram of sodium chloride that the body cannot dispose, it uses twenty-three times the amount of intracellular water to neutralize the salt. This results in cell dehydration while excess fluid accumulates in body tissues, which in turn can contribute to the development of arthritis, unsightly cellulite, kidney and gall bladder stones.
Most experts also believe that excess salt consumption is linked to a number of diseases such as duodenal and gastric ulcer, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, heart disease, heartburn and even death. Ingestion of huge volumes of salt in a short time can be fatal - about 1 g per kg of body weight.
When you consider the fact that an average person ingests 4,000 to 6,000 mg of sodium chloride every day, and heavy users can consume as much as 10,000 mg in a single day, it becomes evident that this is a serious and pervasive health issue. However, with the advent of the Himalayan crystal salt, you now have a viable alternative to the conventional table salt that has been a mainstay in kitchens for centuries. Sadly, as common as table salt is to your kitchen, so are the various diseases linked to its daily consumption. Salt is an indispensable part of your diet but it has been slowly inflicting damage to your body because table salt that you have been accustomed to using is mainly sodium chloride and has nothing in common with the original crystal salt.
Today's cooking salt lacks the vital trace minerals that make the Himalayan crystal salt so precious since it does not burden your body as table salt does.
