Your Body, Your Birth: Secrets for a Satisfying and Successful Birth
After four hospital births, I finally said, enough is enough. Enough of the impersonal treatment. Enough of being treated as if a major crisis could erupt at any moment. For the birth of our fifth and sixth babies, my husband and I decided to give birth at home, alone and unassisted – no doctor or nurses orchestrating the event or witnessing an intensely private moment. I had finally come to realize that birth did not have to be a performance in an impersonal environment, that I could assert my rights and take action to implement my choices.
I realize that this choice is radical to most, sensible to maybe a handful. The biggest argument I hear is "why not give birth in the hospital, just in case something goes wrong?" Well, I address that issue in my book Unassisted Homebirth: An Act of Love. It's a reasonable concern, but I do not have the space to fully discuss the issue here. Instead, I want to share the story of the birth of our youngest child, which occurred on a beautiful spring day in our home on June 7, 2002. I also want to discuss the problems with our society's view of childbirth and what we can do about it.
As I pulled into my driveway after an afternoon at a local Recreation Center with my children, my water broke. It was somewhat surprising since I was not due for another two weeks. I quickly began to get my birth supplies ready and called my husband Bob. I'm someone every woman loves to hate: my pregnancies have been straight-forward, problem free – less than 3 days of morning sickness total; all of my labors have lasted less than three hours, with minimal pushing and very little pain. I know this baby could be born quickly, like the others.
My husband had just started working at the Pentagon and I could not reach him. He was unable to use his cell phone in the Pentagon and I did not have his new office number. He finally checked his messages as he exited the building around 3:30pm and later told me that he did a mad dash – a ½ mile sprint - to his parked car! With his briefcase, laptop and water jug in tow, Bob bolted right past a startled, lone pedestrian obediently awaiting the crosswalk light to tell him it was legal to cross the street.
From his car, Bob called to say he was stuck in traffic and I said, that's ok, Melanie (our 11 yr-old daughter) and I have it handled, but make it home if you can. "Drive with a purpose; safely but illegally if it will get you here faster." Most people are rushing to the hospital in moments like this; my husband was rushing home! It was stressful to say the least. After a frantic drive through rush hour traffic on I-66 on a Friday afternoon, Bob arrived within thirty minutes of the birth of our son!
The baby came on its own time and we had complete freedom. I was not performing the act of childbirth - I was living life to its fullest. It was one of the most emotionally satisfying events of my life – of my husband's life and perhaps of our marriage.
I'm not suggesting that you plan an unassisted homebirth, but I am asking you to trust the birth process and let your body submit to the power of life rather than the control of man – or woman.
Each year, over four million babies are born in the United States. Over 95% occur in the hospital. Over 85% include epidural anesthesia and over one-third are delivered by cesarean-sections. The majority of the remaining births involve other medical procedures. What this means is that many women have relinquished their power to give birth - and as a result, they are not enjoying their childbirth experiences.
Enjoy their childbirth experience, you say? "Huh! I just want a safe birth in a hospital setting and a living, healthy baby to take home." Well, that's the only thing you may get if you go to the hospital to give birth. Of course we all want a safe birth and healthy baby. No one wants to experience danger, disease or death.
More women are opting for homebirths, knowing that birth is a private event. The process of childbirth is tampered with during inductions, epidurals and C-sections. Some women cannot avoid a highly technological or medicated birth, but a large number of women could strive for a natural birth, which is best for baby and mother.
Understandably, people steer clear of pain or discomfort, but there are techniques and strategies for dealing with the possible pain that accompanies childbirth.
