Slapping A Qwerty On A Flagship - The Sony Ericsson Vivaz Pro
Every once in a while, the Big Five in mobile phones come up with a remarkable smartphone that's sheer gadget wizardry all the way, pushing the envelop as they say. One of them is the Symbian full-touchscreen Vivaz from struggling Japanese phone leader Sony Ericsson released only last March. It has, among other things, an 8 megapixel shooter that now firmly defines the minimum standards for flagship camera smartphones. 5-megapixel resolution cameras were the minimum last year, not anymore.
Then came the Sony Ericsson Vivaz Pro. It's basically the Vivaz handset slapped with a full QWERTY side sliding keyboard under it, and then Sony added the "pro" suffix to make it a "professional." If that's what Sony's idea about making a professional phone is, then it's no wonder it's in the red.
The Price of Becoming a "Pro"
The touchscreen Vivaz, also known as the Kurara, has a slim 12.5mm body weighing a really pocket-friendly 97g and sports one of the coolest stunning designs for a monolithic touchscreen. Now, some genius at Sony Ericsson decided to halve the Vivaz body and slide a full QWERTY keyboard under it. Along the way, it increased the thickness to 15mm and grew some more weight at 117g. Then it reduced a defining 8 megapixel camera to last year's standard of 5 megapixels, thanks to slimmer half that can no longer accommodate the focal length for the right CMOS sensor size.
Presumably having to power up the QWERTY keyboard also require added energy consumption, so now, the Sony Ericsson Vivaz Pro has 30 minutes shorter battery life at 12.5 hours of talk time, instead of 13. To Sony's little mind, a "Pro" is someone with a more obese body and can't have the visual acuity to see the bigger picture a young slim amateur can. And it also doesn't last as long. Thanks, Sony Ericsson. But for some real pro, that can be quite insulting.
Inheriting a Fortune from Its Slim Amateur Precursor
But no matter, apart from its QWERTY slider and diminished ability to capture the bigger picture, the Pro inherits everything from its non-Pro precursor. Talk about a slim teenager teaching a grown up pro, this is one handset that really stands out if only for its Vivaz branding familiarity to the market that knows what a Vivaz is.
With autofocus and touchfocus, face and smile detection, LED flash and geo-tagging from its GPS receiver, the Vivaz Pro's 5-megapixel camera is still in top form. It still delivers 720p High Definition video recording at 24 fps frame. Its display remains the same with a 3.2-inch Wide-VGA resistive touchscreen with 16 million colors typical of Symbian smartphones. The Vivaz shares the PowerVR SGX graphics processor found on the Satio but is clocked at 720 MHz, 120 MHz more than in the Satio.
The Sony Ericsson Vivaz Pro is a 3G phone on a dual band UMTS with HSDPA at 10.2 Mbps and HSUPA at 2 Mbps data speeds. It is also a quad band GSM with class 10 GPRS/EDGE on 2G. You get the same WiFi 802.11b/g with DLNA for hotspot surfing together with Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP and microUSB 2.0 for local data synching in the wireless and wired modes, respectively.
Its GPS receiver has Google Maps and WisePilot navigation system for a voiced turn-by-turn navigation. It has the usual stereo FM receiver, media players, a 3.5mm headphone jack, A2DP stereo support and TV-out (VGA resolution) ports for a truly engaging multimedia experience.
