Polish Sheer
Which is damaging my nails more, the nail polish of the nail polish remover?
I've been painting and repainting my nails every few days for the last few weeks, just out of sheer boredom. I have naturally thin nails and want to know if it's the repeated removal of the nail polish that's damaging them, or if it's the fact that I haven't gone more than a few minutes without nail polish for the past three weeks or so.
The true answer is Neither !
Why ? Let me explain ....
Your nails are dead, you can not feed them vitamins or suffocate them ,
Your nails are composed of dead , flattered skin cells witch have gone through the process of keritinization as they go from the matrix to the free edge
Your nails are made up of many layers a lot like wood (or Shreck) while wood is dead you still have to oil it to keep it supple and varnish it to seal it,
While polish remover WILL strip the oils from your nail this is ok as the oil is suppled by the surrounding skin of the finger its self (the lateral side walls and eponychiam) just like your hair doesn't supply its own oils your scalp dose! So after de-hydrating your nails after 24 hours the oil levels would have fully restored,
They other thing is to use a good quality cuticle oil such as OPI avoplex or CND solar oil ,
When it comes to getting a good remover acetone free ones are not the best choice why ? Because when there is acetone in it it will remove the product faster and more efficiently, when it is not present it will take more of the remover and your more likely to build up a reaction to it from this .
Some good tips that I give to my clients would be
1) before you start make sure your nails are clean and go over them with a little polish remover to dehydrate them this will help the polish to stay. (don't polish after bath time!)
2) always use a base coat (protects from staining and a good one will help to polish to adhere) CND'S sticky is perfect for this!
3) ALWAYS USE A TOP COAT (this will stop yellowing , help your polish to last longer , add the shine , and protect and smooth very important if you have any glitter in your polish)
4) use a polish that is 3 free this means with out the 3 main nail product skin irritant ,so they have removed the Formaldehyde, Toluene and DBP. (The main brands on the market that have done this and become 3-FREE are CND color effects , CND shellac , Sparitual & ,Jessica)
5) apply the polish in thin layers,
6) when it is tacky aply some solar oil, this will help speed up the dry time by cutting off the oxegyn supply to the polish and it will also re, hydrate the surrounding skin.
