What is Acne Cosmetics?
Acne cosmetic is small, rasky pink bums that develop on the cheek, chin and forehead. They progress over the span of a few weeks or months and may be persistent for a long time. While cosmetic acnes seldom leave scars, it can be unsightly, enduring and burdensome.
How to get rid of cosmetic acne
The outbreak is easiest stopped by not using the particular cosmetic which trigger the onset. Unfortunately a natural reaction to cosmetic acne is the use of even more cosmetics to cover up the bumps. Since cosmetic acne often appears after several months of repeated use of the acne-producing product, many women do not connect the outbreak with the cosmetics. This is a vicious cycle; the heavier the outbreak, the heavier the make-up… which only enflames the outbreak.
What ingredients cause acne?
The damaging effect of cosmetics on acne can be contributed to the presence of excess oil in the cosmetics. To understand what make-up one should use we should first discuss the skins own surface oil, sebum. Since sebum is produced naturally cosmetic chemist has duplicated this substance assuming that sebum is beneficial to the skin. Sebum has not been proven to benefit the skin. Although functionless, sebum is complex, composed of six or seven principle ingredients, including triglycerides and squalene, a precursor of cholesterol. The triglycerides are broken down on the surface of the skin by bacteria to free fatty acids, which cause acne impactions. Excess sebum clogs the pores.
Fragrances in cosmetics induce or worsen acne. There is a major difference in fragrance-free cosmetics and unscented cosmetics. Even tough the cosmetic doesn't smell there might be fragrances to mask the smell of other ingredients. The best alternative is using fragrance-free cosmetics, but at least one should avoid fragrances with ambrette, bergamot, cinnamte and musk.
Oils are another ingredient that clogs the pores and infects them, so as a general rule make sure your makeup is water-based. Not all the oils are, however, acne inducing. There are two different types of oils; oils that penetrate the skin and oils that don't. Mineral oil and sunflower oil are examples of the latter. These oils are less prone to trigger acne since they don't penetrate the skin and hence doesn't cause comedones. Lanolin is an example of penetrating oils and known to trigger acne. It is, perhaps, the most common ingredient in cosmetics. Lanolin should be avoided together with Isopryl Myristate. Isopryl Myristate is maybe the worst offender. It is actually such an aggressive penetrator that is can be used as a rust-remover.
