Sir Paul Smith is Guest of Honour 2010
Paul Smith is best known as a fashion designer, but he has also designed furniture and upholstery textiles. In 2002, he collaborated with Cappellini to create the Mondo collection and in 2003 he launched 'Bespoke' an upholstery textile for Maharam. He also designs a collection of rugs for The Rug Company.
Paul Smith's boutiques have always been an important aspect of his work. They reflect his character and design, an unmistakable Britishness augmented by the unexpected. In addition to Paul Smith's collections, the boutiques contain a wide selection of jewellery, books, art and antiques. In the window displays, you are just as likely to see Apple's new computer and the latest video games, as you are to see Paul Smith's clothes.
"We want to highlight the crossover between various design genres; fashion, interior design and furniture, and the fact that the world of interior design clearly finds inspiration in the world of fashion today. We also want to draw attention to the significance of the carefully thought-out profile that Paul Smith displays in his boutiques. With this in mind, he feels like an inspiring and interesting choice," says Cecilia Nyberg, Event Manager, Stockholm Furniture Fair and Northern Light Fair.
Paul Smith was born in Nottingham in 1946. He left school at the age of 15 with the sole ambition of becoming a racing cyclist, until his father hauled him off to work at a clothing warehouse. It wasn't until an accident put an end to his dreams of becoming a racing cyclist that Paul Smith started to get more involved in his job, and it was pure coincidence that he met pupils from an art college and became interested in art and fashion.
Paul Smith began studying tailoring in the evenings, and with the help of his girlfriend (now his wife), Pauline Denyer, who had a fashion degree from the Royal College of Art, he opened his first boutique in Nottingham in 1970. In 1976, he showed his first menswear collection in Paris under the Paul Smith label. Today there are 13 collections sold in seventy five countries. Paul Smith shops are found in London, Paris, Milan, New York, LA, San Francisco, Antwerp, Singapore, Hong Kong, Soeul, Moscow, Cape Town and over 200 throughout Japan. Paul Smith continues to be an integral part of the company; he is both designer and chairman.
Previous Guests of Honour include Patricia Urquiola, Spain; the brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, France; Naoto Fukasawa, Japan; Konstantin Grcic, Germany; Giulio Cappellini, Italy, and most recently, Ineke Hans, the Netherlands.
The next Stockholm Furniture Fair and Northern Light Fair will take place on 9-13 February, week 6, 2010, featuring a new hall with an additional 10,000 m2, and new weekdays, Tuesday - Saturday.
