origins of religion: have you seen the movie 1408?

as i watched it last night, there was a part where the little girl was dying from some incurable disease. the parents were setting her mind at ease talking about heaven and god. well, it made me think about the origins of religion. not just christianity, but all religion.

it made me think that there are very few animals on this planet who are aware of their mortality, us being one of them, and maybe religions came about for the simple fact that we need to think there is something more. it can really calm someone's mind to think they will see their loved ones again after death, but of course this doen't make it true.

what do you think? was religion created at a time when primitve man became "aware" and was stricken with grief?
jin - i partially agree. what i don't agree with is the word "most". all religions were created by man. but i just wonder why the first religion was created

Early man created "Gods" or the "unseen" to justify what was apparent in their natural world. With a Sun person that moved it from east to west and the same with the moon. Thunder and lightening had a God and rain had a God. As their technology became more advanced - action vrs reaction - then agriculture, something caused these things to happen. Since the reactions were unseen then it must be one of the unseen or Gods or Spirits that do this. Also, with early man, he saw spiritual anomalies he could not explain, possibly a forth sight, or ghost, or even vivid dreams with messages. And when these things happened, triggering memory responses, (de ja vu ) if you will, then it Must Have been the "unseen" that spoke to him/her. With the earliest humans, death was unexplainable and since many lived in groups in caves and natural stone shelters, they had emotions to the one that passed and did not want to feed them to the animals and as the bodies decade they smelled, hence burial. As they progressed and had created "Gods" to their unexplainable occurrences in their enviroment, then their must be one for the dead they cared for. By placing artifacts and clothing as well as food for their journey to the next life. This gives you a feel of comfort that your loved one is not in a hole in the ground to mask the stink, they are going to the "unseen" and they will be taken care of. The thought is, if you bury something and you dig it up a year later and all that is left are bones, then what happened to the recognizable person they buried? A "God" came and took them away.
Remember, they had no knowledge of biological workings of the body. They did not know what the bones were for. The did not know what bacteria or organisms that ate the decay were and that is what took away the flesh. It was a "great unseen being" that did it. So to make sure to revere the unseens they would consider them the ones that took them away. To make it easier for those emotionally and help them keep on and want to follow the tribe as they migrated since many were nomadic, the story of a great God would come and take the person to a beautiful earth like setting where the temperature was always constant, food was plentiful, and they could live like they do but without worries and when it is time for them to join them they will have a place for them prepared. Wouldn't that be easier to digest rather than bury him/her and cover up the stink? As humans progressed so did the deities. As each scientific anomalie was figured out, so a deity "died" in a since. Then came the deities of emotions. God of War, Goddess of Love, God of Knowledge, God of Phylosophy, Goddess of hate and discord, Goddess of Strength and Health. These were now the "Unseens" and to understand what you can not see it must be a deity or an "unseen" that controls it. Ect Ect Ect. And now a days, many religions only have one deity. Only very few have demi gods still.
