What is an electronic muscle stimulator?
An electronic muscle stimulator also known as an EMS or a tens unit, is a small device that sends electrical current through wires attached to pads strategically placed on the body in order to stimulate a tight muscle or sooth a sore spot.
Will they give me abs?
These electronic muscle stimulators are advertised to tone and strengthen abdominal muscles. Do they really work? No! They are not going to give you abs. That's a load of crap. All the muscle stimulation in the world is not going to make abs show through a tub of lard. And it's not going to make the fat go away.
All these people on the commercials wearing these stimulator belts don't have an ounce of fat on them. So of course you can see abs on them. And all those testimonial were in pretty good condition to begin with .Notice how many of them have tans in the after pictures or men with shaved chests in the after pictures.
These companies pick out people and help them personally to become successful and then stick them on infomercials telling you how fast and easy it is. But the truth is that if it were really so fast and easy everyone would have abs and there would be no fat people on earth. Why, because if it's so easy everyone would be doing it, and it would be a major world wide news story and pot bellies and obesity would be gone in 30 days. But you won't see it put any abs on a sumo wrestler.
They can help to strengthen muscles. They are used to help the paralyzed or the bed ridden to keep their muscle from going into atrophy. Its an indirect way of exercise for these people.Its helps them that cannot exercise to keep a certain level of muscle tone.
They are also used for sprains and muscle injuries to loosen the muscle, and improve the blood flow to the injury to promote faster healing. They help with muscle spasms, your range of motion also.
Have you ever used one?
Yes I have, I have two of them. I was given one by the insurance company to help an injury heal and reduce pain. I still use it to this day as needed. An electronic muscle stimulator uses electrical signals to tense and release muscles.
What do they look like?
Muscle stimulators come in many sizes. You can the super duper deluxe models with lots of wire and pads or you can get the small pocket size models for use at home, at work or anywhere you go.
Mine is a small pocket model with 4 pads. You can take it anywhere and use it at anytime. It's about the size of a black berry or small TV remote.
They come with little round or square pads that stick to your skin. Some of the El cheapos come with Velcro straps and you have strap the pads on which is very inconvenient because body parts are all different sizes.
Some have 2 pads some may have 8 or more allowing you massage a lot of different muscles simultaneously. They have two pads per wire. You can set them to stimulate at different rhythms and different intensities.
It's like bringing the chiropractor or therapist to your home. It's an extra source of relief. You can set to for short quick pulses, steady continuous stimulation, or long drawn out pulses. It's good to change them around from time to time and get a different massage.
These really do feel good and it is a muscle massage. It's similar to those ultra sound stimulators used in the chiropractor's office to loosen up muscles and relieve pain.
What do you use yours for?
I use mine for joint pain, headaches, back pain, neck pain, throbbing feet, and even sore legs. Where ever you have a pain gives it a try. If you have heart conditions check with your doctor because this uses a mild electrical current. Mine uses a small 9 volt battery.
The bottom line is that it's a good little piece of equipment to have in your pain relief arsenal. Its not magic cure, but it is another option to get a bit of relief, just as a heating pad, vibrator or sauna. This is just more physically involved with the muscle and it's always good to have something extra at home when you hurt.
So remember next time you have some over worked muscles, throw the juice to them and give them a shock.
