Remembering A Senior Citizen Friend

My friend, Carrie, was a senior citizen when we met. I was a relatively young mother with a small daughter who was in kindergarten. We had decided that we wanted to do some service by visiting a resident of a nursing home, and we were assigned to Carrie with whom we developed a friendship during our weekly visits. Carrie was ninety. She could see and hear to carry on a conversation. She even had her own teeth.

Those were not particularly difficult economic times, but it was still rather costly for people to live at nursing homes. It was out of reach for many people. Carrie was a retired school teacher, and her retirement paid for her care. She stated that she was fortunate to be able to live in such comfortable surroundings with constant care available.

Carrie was a person who was basically alone and had no other regular visitors. Yet she had a cheerful outlook on life. She had never married and had no relatives close by. She had a younger sister who lived in the same state, but her health and mind were not good enough for her to visit Carrie.

Sometimes we would take Carrie outdoors in the wheel chair to enjoy the beauty of nature. We would visit amidst the trees and bushes under the clear blue sky. Carrie had stories to tell of her childhood and of teaching children. She said she had decided early on that she would not marry because she was unable to bare children. It was during an age when people married for the sake of love and having families. She did not feel it was fair to marry someone without being able to give him children to carry on his family name and heritage. It was a different time unlike this day and age when relationships are not valued so greatly by much of society. She was a lovely person, and she would likely have had chances to marry.

Although it was difficult for her to get around, she liked being taken out once in a while for lunch at Kentucky Fried Chicken where she especially enjoyed the coleslaw. Carrie placed pictures drawn by my daughter on the bulletin board in her room where she put her cherished keepsakes. She put articles there which had some relevance to our friendship.

Our visits came to a close when my family moved out of the state, and we eventually lost touch with Carrie. She most likely lived out her days at the nursing home until she left this earthly existence. I almost did not want to know because I knew the end was near. Now that I have become a senior myself, I remember her fondly. I think she would have said that life can be hard, but a good attitude helps make one happy. Growing old can be a good time of life.
