how can i stop my mini lop from eating her fur?
I have a 9 month old mini lop who has just started pulling her fur out and eating it. I brush her but nothing comes out. I give her papya pills and fruit. I have pulled a clump of fur that she had in her mouth that she was choking on. I have no idea what to do.
1. if she is a non-breeding female you may want to consider getting her spayed. Pulling of the fur is a sexual maturity nervous behavior.
Unspayed rabbits will pull tufts of their own fur off their bodies to make a nest during a false pregnancy or breeding seasons.
Unspayed females are at a higher risk for uterine and mammory cancers.
2. check the skin for signs of mites, possible fleas, look for the possible onset of mange, look for rashes, or any signs of allergies. These are also reasons she could be pulling on her fur. Although- at 9 months old, she's sexually mature enough to be going through false pregnancies where she will want to nest.
Best thing to do... if you notice signs of fur ingestion, if her feces looks as if it has fur embedded in it when she poops them out...
As soon as you notice signs try a hairball remedy like 10cc's of fresh pineapple juice once a day for 3 days. (I also use pineapple juice for 3 days 1x a month as a prevention since my bunny was a hardcore self groomer.)
And above all else, contact your vet for more information! It is very important to keep your vet in the know about everything going on with her since they have such delicate systems... if you don't have a vet... you need to get one. Rabbits, like cats, dogs, reptiles, birds, ect. Need vet care. yearly checkups as well as being seen when they are ill or not acting normally.
If possible hairballs are not controlled, it could lead to surgery or death as unlike cats, they are not able to pass hairballs.
