Lot Eye
My puppy had a lot of eye boogers but now her eye turned blue. What happened and what should i do?
She's a Shitzu/Pomeranian mix. I'm planning on taking her to the vet but what could have caused it?
Shih Tzu's and poms are both breeds that can have eye issues, especially if she looks more Shih Tzu in regards to her fur. Often these breeds, among others, can have entropion which is the inward rolling of the eyelid, making her eyelashes rub against the eye, other times longer hair around the eyes can cause irritation which can lead to infection, and other times conjunctivitis can be bacterial or viral, so hard to say without seeing your dog. usually if the eye boogers are yellow or green it's bacterial and they need eye drops or ointment. As far as the blue on her eye, it can be several things but glaucoma jumps to mind..
Glaucoma is defined as an increase in pressure within the eye. The increased pressure is the result of a buildup of the intraocular fluid which is known as aqueous humor. In a healthy animal, aqueous humor primarily drains out through a circular filter at the junction of the clear cornea and white sclera, called the iridocorneal angle. Animals with glaucoma have an abnormality in the filter which obstructs outflow, resulting in a buildup of fluid within the eye. This build up of fluid can often look like a blue spot (similar looking to a cataract) but there are other possibilities.
Have an ophthalmic exam done at a vet with a digital opthalmacope.. reason being that the images of the eye that are taken can easily be sent to a canine opthamologist.
