Saint Simon Island is the largest and most visited of Georgia Golden Isles. Its rich history, comfortable climate and premium tourist resorts make it one of the most enticing vacation spots on the Eastern coast. Saint Simon Island is located approximately 12 miles from the city of Brunswick. The island experiences a mild, coastal climate and is often spared the wrath of hurricanes moving up the coast of the Atlantic seaboard. The first known inhabitant on Saint Simon Island was Creek Indian. The first permanent settlements were established by the French, which led to long term conflict between the Spanish and French over the territory, paving the way for English takeover in the 18th century.
In 1732, King George granted a colonial charter to James Oglethorpe, establishing the colony of Georgia. In 1736, the colonial town of Frederica and Fort Saint Simon were founded on the island. After the Revolutionary War, They began to attract coastal farmers from South Carolina. The most successful crop on the island was cotton, and the type of cotton grown on Saint Simon and the other coastal islands became known as "Sea Island Cotton."
Many islands off of the coast of Georgia and the Carolinas became privately owned in the early 20th century. This remained a part of the state of Georgia, which made it a prime target for resort development, and today, the island hosts several premium resorts, golf courses, beds and breakfasts, and beaches. The early resort period had been largely limited to the people who could come by train and ferry. The resort consisted of wooden buildings clustered near the pier, most of which were boarded up for nine months of the year. The island was still largely wilderness, with few roads. These picture changes rapidly with the coming of the mass produced automobile and the improvement of roads for these cars. these are one of the Georgia coastal islands still available for development. Most of the islands were the private property of rich people holding them as a private retreat and hunting grounds.
Further more, concerning the weather, it should be noted that during the summer the area is under the influence of the Bermuda High, laying off to the east. This prevents the usual progression of Hi and Low pressures from moving through in normal progression. Thus, in summer the weather is subject to local thunderstorms, rather than to the large system of atmospheric movement. Of course this is no longer effective in the hurricane season, and as fall comes near, the pattern of whether the movement.
