Parabens: These are generally used in the drug and skincare industry as preservatives and could be listed on the label as methyl, propyl, butyl, or ethyl paraben. Research has shown that parabens interfere with your body's endocrine system because of their estrogenic properties; studies also show that they cause allergic reactions and even cancer.
Padimate-O: This is also known as octyl dimethyl; it is mostly found in sunscreens. Studies show that the energy absorbed by the sunscreen could be turned to free radicals which could then lead to skin cancer and other diseases.
Mineral oil: This is another ingredient you need t avoid when buying a hydrating body cream. It is a petroleum derivative which can be listed as liquid paraffin, paraffin wax or petrolatum. It is widely used in the skin care industry as emollient because it is cheap; unfortunately, it does not hydrate your skin. All it does is to coat and clog your pores preventing your skin from breathing or removing toxins thereby leading to breakouts (acne).
Mineral oil strips your skin of its natural oil and hence causes dryness and chapping. Studies also show that it can increase the photosensitivity of your skin, it could also cause cancer.
Fragrances: This is another toxic chemical, stay away from products that contain fragrances because they can affect your central nervous system leading to irritability, depression and hyperactivity.
Alcohols: Certain alcohols such as ethanol, ethyl alcohol, methanol, benzyl alcohol, isopropyl and SD alcohol cause dryness and irritation to your skin. They also strip your skin of its natural acid mantle making you more susceptible to infections. They also cause premature aging and the appearance of brown pigmentation.
