Why does the hole in the ozone layer not let out some of the heat from global warming?
I know what global warming is and how it works, but why wouldn't a hole in the ozone layer allow for the built up heat to be released? This might sound dumb, but its something I don't understand
it does.
however, since it's found at the poles, where it's not really hot, the effect is minimal.
in addition, it's not like the ozone is gone, and there's a vacuum in it's place.
the ozone is converted into oxygen.
ozone and oxygen turn out to have about the same insulating effects, so it really doesn't matter a lot whether the oxygen in the ozone layer is O2 or O3.
the real difference is that O3 intercepts high energy photons, like x-rays, and UV rays, from the sun.
when there's a hole in the antarctic, as long as there aren't a lot of living animals in the vicinity, it's not nearly as bad as the eventual results of global warming will be.
the reason that the US, and the world, addressed the ozone hole is that it was expanding, and, had nothing been done, then, as it expanded, it would, in the near future, occur over places where both animals, and people lived.
then it would have been serious.
however, the problem has been addressed, and recovery is happening.
it's slow, but it is happening.
you're not alone in thinking there's a relationship between the two.
lots of folks seem to do that.
i don't know whether it's a lack of science education, or whether it's being preached by rush limburger, and others like him.
to summarize, it's not a hole.
it's just a place where much of the O3, found at very high altitudes, has been converted to O2.
and O2 does not intercept incoming high energy UV and x-ray photons.
it's really just an unfortunate choice of name.
