High Stakes Poker (The Show)
The reason that High Stakes Poker is in my opinion the #1 poker show is for a few reasons. The first is that it was the first of its kind, a No Limit Hold’em Cash Game on television showing people how poker is really played in a no limit fashion with hardly any all-ins. It also really opened my eyes, because I was used to only seeing tournaments on television with the hole cards, and this was such a totally different game! Another reason is there are so many classic hands, from Daniel Negreanu’s full house vs. Gus Hansen’s quads hand, to Barry Greenstein’s AA vs. Sammy Farha’s KK all-in preflop and Sammy being Sammy spikes a K. I mean there so many memorable hands I cannot even put a number on it.
I also like the fact that High Stakes Poker has tried to do things differently ever since the beginning, in the first year they had a 50k minimum buy-in, Season 2 it was 100k, in Season 4 they had a 500k minimum game in addition to the original 100k minimum one, and this year in Season 5 they raised the blinds from $300-600, with a $100 ante, to $400-800 blinds with a $200 ante, and they increased the minimum buy-in to 200k. And like in a normal cash game they let the players “kick up” the game when everyone has agreed to increase the blinds.
The thing that makes cash games better than a tournament is that the players are playing with there own money, this is real poker, with people actually playing, instead of just shoving their chips in hoping for the best. In a cash game when somebody shoves in $250,000 of their own money whether it be with a good hand or a bluff, that is a lot of money, whereas in a tournament when someone shoves in 250,000 in chips essentially he is betting only whatever his buy-in is. I also think Gabe Kaplan and AJ Benza make a pretty good combination in the commentary booth, I am sure there are some people that don’t like them, but they are definitely above average and it doesn’t hurt the show which helps.
