Why was Mariah Carey's "Glitter" so underrated?
OMG back in '01 I saw it and I found it good [not brilliant] but critics made out it was a joke and a bomb failure!!, the soundtrack is still one of my favourite albums!! It has some meaningful, emotional, inspiring up-lifting songs that show her vocal range and ability at PEAK!! and also has some up-beat faster more fun songs!!
I liked it but gosh critics were harsh I've seen a million more worse movies that didn't get bragged on about like this did!!
btw The soundtrack was also highly criticised badly [just because the movie did bad] the critics didn't even here the music!
also the movie was released on 9/11 which didn't help as well!!
Ok maybe the movie was not so good!! But why did they have to badly criticize the soundtrack?? It was really good!!
The problem was that the album wasn't that bad, but it wasn't good compared too all of Carey's previous albums. And of course, it was the soundtrack of a very poorly received movie.
I have a question for you. If i said, 'list all of Mariah Carey's album from Best to Worst', how would you organise it? Take a typical American whose listened to Mariah's music since she first came out. Wouldnt they say something like:
-Daydream
- Music Box
- Mariah Carey
- Butterfly
- Merry Christmas
- Emotions
- Rainbow
- MTV Unplugged
Those albums, without a doubt, are extraordinary and are of excellent quality. Look at "Glitter", where would you put the album? At the top? I think mainly at the bottom.
And this was the problem with the album. It was released with a bad movie and it wasn't Mariah best work, but in fact, one of her worst. And yes, it was also during 9/11 and her mental 'breakdown', which didn't help.
That's why it was so underrated. I loved the album, but i understand why it was bombed. It simply wasn't at the top, and with artists like Carey, people expect her to get better and better. When she doesn't deliver, they bombard and harass her and her albums, and question her passion (which is stupid!)
