Immigration Officer, Geoffrey Pitout Sheds Some Light..

What does your job as an Immigration Officer entail?
I profile all passengers or people wanting to immigrate to New Zealand  and identify potential high risk passengers. We have the ability to prevent entry to passengers who don’t meet entry requirements. We use sophisticated IT systems to track passengers prior to them arriving in NZ. We have various contacts all over the world that we use to assist us in communicating with passengers. We also assist airlines to process passengers flying in to NZ..

Do you conduct any interviews with potential migrants?

We interact with passengers onshore in NZ. This could be for a variety of reasons which include immigration matters relating to visas and interviews to determine passengers visiting intentions, tracking passengers who have overstayed their welcome and who are returned to their port of origin.

What are your working conditions like? Do you use any equipment?
My working environment is very secure and access is strictly regulated. We have some of the most advanced IT systems available. Our documentation examination equipment is state of the art.

Have you had significant experiences dealing with migrants?
I encounter the usual migrants who arrive with barely enough money to buy a hamburger. As well as the odd mental patient who believed they were persecuted by law enforcement etc.

What makes this job exciting and worthwhile?
The ability to protect New Zealand’s borders through my direct observations and actions makes it worthwhile. New Zealand has no borders, so protecting the country is a lot easier, as the only way in/out is by air or water.

You’re originally from South Africa and NZ is your adoptive country. How do your experiences influence your job?
I’ve only been in New Zealand for 2 years. I was a Superintendent with the South African Police Service. I managed to obtain residence prior to immigrating to New Zealand. South Africans who immigrate and go about arriving in New Zealand the wrong way frustrate me. Many South Africans aren’t granted entry because they don’t meet entry requirements and provide misleading information on arrival. This cannot influence my decisions. Every person is assessed against entry requirements irrelevant of where they come from.

What do you wish migrants would realise about your job? What would you like them to know?
Migrants should ensure they’ve done their homework prior to arriving in NZ. If you arrive unprepared you may be in for a bit of a surprise. Don’t provide misleading information. 9 times out of 10 you’ll be caught out. You may have spent a lot of money to gain absolutely nothing.
