What eyeliner is best; gel, pencil, liquid or power?
I'm going to buy my first ever eyeliner this weekend, and I was wondering what type people prefer to use?
There is no best, as each gives a different look to your makeup.
Liquid liners give the sharpest of lines, and are best used for upper lash line. They can be used to make thin, thick, and in between lines, and are generally more "crisp" and "clean" looking.
Creams are generally the closest to liquids in terms of how "crisp" the lines are. These are also best kept for upper lash line. They are much harder to blend out properly than other easily blended liners, but in some cases you can blend them out. They give a bit of a softer look than liquids, but can look very similar.
As for powders, they can be both soft and sharp. When used dry, they will provide the upper and/or lower lash line with a very soft, diffused line, not highly pigmented compared to other liners. These are great for girls that are inexperienced with liner as they are not as noticeable on the eye and can be easily blended and smoothed out. However, when used wet with water, they will basically give the same results as a liquid or cream.
You can easily just use an eyeshadow though for the exact same results.
Now gels, they go on (generally, depending on the brand) quite smoothly, giving it a nice clean yet soft line. They can also be blended out, but not as smoothly as pencil/kohls. Diffusing it with a powder shadow will really help in giving it that very soft look. These ones can be used on upper or lower lash lines, and can be drawn in thick or thin.
Now pencils. These are the ones that most people use because most people find them easiest to use. They can be used on upper and lower lash lines, and can be easily blended and softened. They do not provide sharp lines however, and can give similar results as the gels.
Now which one is best? Well, which one gives the look you desire? I personally like them all, but I use pencils and creams the most. I love liquid liners as I find them very easy to apply (I am, however, more experienced with makeup) as well as cream liners, both for my upper lash line. I prefer using a pencil, either in gel or regular/kohl form for my lower lash line, or sometimes I will simply use an eyeshadow.
Since you are starting out with eyeliner, I suggest getting a gel one in pencil form as they are easily applied, or getting a regular pencil liner so that if you make any mistakes, it's easily blended out.
Most women that take the time to learn how to properly apply their makeup find it easy to apply all forms of eyeliner once they have taken time to use each type. Personally, it took me a few tries to get down liquids (a good applicator helps a lot), and for the other forms it took me the first try to get the application down. However, if you are a makeup novice, it may take more time. It really all depends on the person.
