1991 US Open Quarterfinal: Jennifer Capriati d. Gabriela Sabatini - An exciting match, as Jennifer played go-for-broke-tennis. Jen won the 1st set 6-3, but Sabatini finally woke up in the 2nd set. As the match moved toward a 2nd set tiebreak, Jen looked exhausted, as Sabatini was moving Jennifer all over the court chasing down drop shots. However, Sabatini seemed unnerved, as Jennifer was squeaking her shoes to distract Gaby's serve. In the tiebreak, Jen continued squeaking her shoes, and Sabatini finally cracked under the pressure. Jennifer put Sabatini away in the tiebreak, and won the match 6-3, 7-6.
Sabatini never complained about Jen squeaking her shoes, saying it didn't bother her. But do you feel that Jen's strategy to squeak her shoes as Sabatini was serving tainted her victory?. That was a long time ago, and honestly I don't remember the match. But people would only call that bad sportsmanship if they were supporting Sabatini. In fact the opposite is true. Bad sportsmanship would be complaining about something like that after you lost (which Sabatini didn't do thankfully).
Players today on hardcourts squeak their shoes all the time. That's what happens on hardcourts. That's just like the women's players of the early 90s complaining about hte way Seles used to grunt - as if that was really the reason they couldn't beat her. They even got a grunt meter for Seles matches. Today everyone grunts.
