Forbidden Fantasy
How do you write fantasy that will captivate people?
I'm a huge fantasy fan and when I'm older I want to be a young adult fantasy author. But I see so many awful books these days that are just following the forbidden-fantasy-romance thing and a lot of them aren't interesting and I forget them soon after I read them.
I'm scared of being an author like that, something that people will forget after they read it. I want to captivate people like JK Rowling did with Harry Potter and how Stephenie Meyer (somehow managed) to do with Twilight.
Does anyone have any tips or advice to NOT be like one of those forgettable, trend-following authors and to actually make people fall in love with my writing?
First off, learn to write, and to write well. You learn to write by doing it, number one, and by studying those who do it and do it well. So many authors don't ever get past the starting block. Looking at your sentence structure, I think you can do that. Once you get there, discover what it is inside you that captures your own mind and soul. What is it about those stories that grabbed you? Is it the structure? The plot twists, with their surprises, wild goose chases, and dead ends? Is it the realism and attention to detail? Tony Robbins said to emulate your heroes if you want to become like them, and successful like them. Heroes, plural. If you try to make something just like someone else's style, you'll never find your own unique and powerful one. So find out what interests you in all those different styles you enjoy, mix in your own personality and perspective, and get to it. Don't forget good structure, or you'll hit a brick wall. By structure here, I mean story structure, not just sentence structure. For more on structure, read Karen S. Wiesner's First Draft books. She'll have you done in half the time (or better), has written about a hundred books of her own, and is promoted by some other really great authors, such as Piers Anthony. $30.00 Writing School by Michael W. Dean will help you with the business end and to get your personality and style into your work.He'll also teach you how to network and self-promote, when you get to that point.
After you're done, let it simmer. Work on another project for a month, and then come back to it. Polish it, and then pass it on to your friends and others whose opinion you value. LISTEN to their feedback. When you're done with your second polishing, send it to a (good) editor, and listen to their feedback. Then you need to find an (also good) agent willing to run with it and get it to the right publisher, so it can be seen and read and talked about. There are many books out there as good or better than Rowling's that have never been read simply because no one ever saw them. You can't captivate people who never see your work!
