Food Grade Grease and Their Contribution in Food Safety
Food grade grease has been introduced in the market to control the many problems in machineries in food processing units. A food processing unit such as a bakery or diary etc. may face many problems in the process of manufacturing. There are problems like bearings failing, heavy loads, heat and friction. Additionally, contaminants such as water, dust, flour, metal shavings, acids, caustics, etc. also slow down the pace in the overall output of a food processing plant.
However, traditional greases cannot be used in food plants as they may get mixed with the food products and are may cause various health hazardous problems. This is where food-grade grease comes into play. However, there are certain ways of using these greases. The problem of heat and friction can be approached by the dropping point of the grease. And this can be done by making the dropping point higher than the expected operating temperature range.
Also make it a point that your food grade grease has an excellent water washout rating, which is very necessary while dealing with contaminants such as cleaning solutions and water. As per their application in various food processing units and their ingredients, it can be categorized into three basic types. As per the USDA standards, the food-grade designations are H1, H2 and H3.
The H1 grease/ lubricants are used in environments where there is some possibility of incidental food contact. The H2 food-grade grease on the other hand is used on equipment and machine parts in locations where there is no possibility that the lubricant or lubricated surface contacts food. Though the ingredients of this variety can differ from time to time, yet they should not contain heavy metals like antimony, arsenic, cadmium, etc, that may present health hazards. Again, H3 lubricants/greases are used to clean and prevent rust on hooks, trolleys and similar equipment. All these varieties can be filtered and cleaned using baldwin filters.
There are food grade lubricant varieties that have the same function like the former one. Both these varieties ensure food safety, which further provide safety to lives.
