Skype offers an unlimited package which includes free calls to many countries (available in monthly or annual plans) or a pre-paid option which charges for calls by the minute. A dual SIM phone can greatly help the international traveler stay within reach of their contacts.
Additionally, Skype offers a mobile phone application, for smartphones, that will allow users to make phone calls through the Skype system directly from their mobile phone. This will not necessarily offer free calls for the traveler, due to the need to utilize the data plan set up with the mobile carrier (though using wi-fi would be free) and there's also a per minute cost charged by Skype; however, it can greatly reduce the costs of making phone calls when traveling. Some carriers offer discounted rates for data and international roaming so be sure to check all available options related to international travel.
The potential to save a significant amount of money is readily available to any traveler who finds themselves traveling to international locales on a fairly regularly basis.
