How long to keep eyeliner
Makeup doesn't last forever. Eventually, all cosmetics will dry up, or harbour bacteria, or break down. Eyeliner is no exception. It is important not to use out-of-date makeup, especially around your eyes, as you could create a painful eye infection. Not only that, but makeup past its best doesn't look so great either as the quality deteriorates.
An eyeliner pencil has a different shelf-life to liquid eyeliner. Eyeliner pencil doesn't dry out nearly as quickly as liquid, and will last about 2-3 years. Thankfully, that is usually enough time to use it up. Liquid eyeliner lasts about 3-4 months, as this is more prone to drying out and growing bacteria. Twist up eyeliner dries out more quickly, and you can't sharpen it either; sharpening eye liner pencils helps to freshen them up and get rid of surface bacteria.
As a rule of thumb, if it smells funny or looks like it shouldn't, then it's time to bin it! Makeup with natural ingredients usually last for a shorter time period than heavily synthetic makeup, as many non-natural ingredients are added to extend shelf-life. Also, if when you apply it, the eyeliner tugs at your eye, it is another indicator that the eyeliner is past it's best; eyeliner should glide smoothly when applied.
As a tip, get a marker pen and write the date you bought the eyeliner on the end. Then you'll know how long you've got before it starts to go off.
To maximise the shelf-life of your eyeliner, follow these simple steps:
1. Keep the lid that comes with your eyeliner. This helps keep the eyeliner clean. If your lid cracks, or if you lose it, you can always use a little cling film to keep the eyeliner clean and minimise bacteria building up on it.
2. Regularly sharpening your eyeliner removes any surface bacteria or eye-shadow that may be clinging to it.
3. Make sure you always screw your liquid eyeliner top back on properly, and don't leave it open for too long. This keeps it fresher and makes it harder for it to dry out.
4. If you have a lot of eyeliners, you could keep them in an airtight Tupperware container to help prevent bacteria breeding.
5. If you do develop an eye infection, throw out your eyeliner and buy another one. It may have been the cause, but if it wasn't, it may have picked up some of the infection. Better to be safe than sorry.
It is worth trying to get the maximum, safe usage out of your makeup. As we all know, makeup is expensive stuff and no one wants to waste it. The shelf-life of eyeliner is usually enough time to use it up. Simply look after your cosmetics to maximise their shelf-life, their quality, and their hygiene.
