Why do the French call Robin Hood, Robin des Bois? Doesn't it mean Robin Wood?
We must change the way on his behalf English: "Hood" and "wood" are not at all homophones. His name is quite "Robin the Hood. " The homophony of its name (Robin Hood) with the expression "Rob in hood" (which, incidentally, means "flying dan the hood" and not "fly in the woods") is irrelevant.
Also by the way, Robin la capuche sounds awful in French so I think it is because of a phonetic problem that the French call him Robin des Bois (Robin of the Woods). It sounds more mysterious and cuter than Robin la Capuche! Thus Rob In Woods would make also more sense than Rob In Hood as he was robbing in the woods!

The British people call him this way because of his hood!
So why shouldn't the French people call him Robin of the woods? After all, he often attacked the caravans of rich and nobles in the woods, didn't he? Then here is your answer! 
And, by the way, the French don't hate him, we admire his guts and his romantic ways too!
