Cuba Travel Destinations – Santa Clara, Myths & Traditions
By the end of the 17th century, Havana was the harbor from which boats filled with gold and silver departed to Spain. For this reason and for the wealth obtained from trade, pirates started to besiege the coastal towns. The village of Remedios was one of the most in demand because of its riches gained from the trading of cattle, coffee, tobacco, and sugar. By 1689, 18 Remedian families decided to run away from this situation and accepted a Royal Favor of land located around the ranch of Antón Díaz in the center of the Island; a small valley among low hills that the native Indians called Cubanacán, bathed by a river called La Sabana at the time (Cubanicay to the Indians and currently Bélico). By the middle of July 15th of the same year, the first mass was officiated on the main hill under a tamarind tree. It was founded, thus, the town of "Dos Cayos", later renamed the city of Santa Clara.
Full of mysteries, myths, and legends, Santa Clara became an important joining point between Havana and the Eastern part of the country. With the development of land communications and a railroad, the city became the junction of all traffic in the Island. The Santa Clarians or pilongos (the ones baptized in the main cathedral of Santa Clara) are among the greatest story tellers in Cuba. Several stories are popular among them, stories of ghosts, bizarre deaths, a mermaid in the puddles of the Bélico, the Perico donkey strolling around the streets and houses searching for food, and even a mysterious black bird that flys all afternoons from all directions to the grove in the Leoncio Vidal Park to spend the night there.
Santa Clara is not a city of touristic attractions, but it owns a rich cultural tradition, especially in poetry and music. The Mejunje de Silverio (Silverio's brew) is an ideal place to experience it; and it's not because they offer any strange drink there. It's called this for its socio-cultural cosmopolitism (hippies, transvestites, remarkable figures of the Art and Culture gather together every day to enjoy quality shows). Its layout, with narrow streets and many squares and parishes, is interesting to stroll around and to get to know its people. Since a few years ago, the major attraction has become the Square and Mausoleum to the Commander Ernesto Ché Guevara, which houses the remains of the Cuban-Argentinean guerrilla warrior and of the majority of the warriors who accompanied him in the unsuccessful Bolivian campaign. The Complex has become a place of pilgrimage for Ché's admirers. A lateral pantheon was recently built, containing the remains of the Cuban soldiers who fought under his command during the Campaign of Las Villas, which determined the success of the Cuban Revolution in 1959 with the Battle of Santa Clara.
Santa Clara accommodations are modest: the Santa Clara Libre Hotel downtown and a motel of rustic cabins 3 Km from the center (Los Caneyes Motel) are the most popular. However, private homes in the city offer a wonderful service and they are quite numerous. The most interesting places are the Museum of Decorative Arts, the Monument to the derailment of the Armored Train (one of the biggest achievements reached by Ché in the Battle of Santa Clara); and the architectural jewels of the Provincial Library, and Justice Palace, among others.
