Holi- The festival of colours

Holi is a Hindu festival of colours celebrated all over India in the month of February or March in the spring. The day comes after the day of  Phalgun Purnima. In this festival,people put colours on each other and share sweets and cold drinks called ‘Thandai' which are specially prepared for this festival. The festival symbolises to promote friendship, unity and brotherhood by forgetting all differences and quarrels of the past.

The legend of this festival dates back to Satya Yuga where a demon King called Hirankasyap tried to kill his son Prahalad,a great devotee of Lord Vishnu, in many ways. But everytime Prahalad survived.One day he tried to burn him in a pyre,with the help of his sister Holika, who had the boon of getting out of fire unburnt by the grace of a diamond. Holika took Prahalad with her and entered the fire but by divine grace,the diamond slipped out from Holika's hand to Prahalad's hand. As a result Prahalad came out of the fire safely and Holika got burnt down.People celebrated the occasion as ‘Holika Dahan' meaning the burning of the demon princess Holika as symbol of victory of good over evil.

In North India, people observe Holika Dahan prior to the evening of Holi festival. On this occasion, the people collect firewoods , assemble them at a place in a form of inverted cone and light fire to it. The ladies offer the new harvest of the season such as nuts,fruits and grains to this holy fire and take  rounds of the fire. Th pray for the happiness and safety of their children and family.

Another popular legend with this festival is related to Lord Krishna and Radha where the Lord used to play colours with Radha and their friends. This festival is widely celebrated in Brindaban and Mathura. The most popular form of this festival is lathi maar holi celebrated in Brindaban where the young girls of Brindaban use to hit the boys with sticks before putting colour on them.

The Phalgun Purnima isalso known as Dol Purnima in Orissa and West Bengal. On the occassion of Dol Purnima the idols of  Lord Krishna and his divine consort Shri Radha is taken out in processions in small palanquins where The Lord visits the house of the devotees. There the deities are offered puja and prayers accompanied by offerings of fruits and another item made of puffed rice grain. At last,the deities are offered colours after which the devotees put colour on each other to celebarte the occassion and as a blessing of The Lord.The primary colour used in this festival for worshipping the Lord is also known as Phagu or the Abira,which is red in colour.

Nowadays, many synthetic and chemical colours are being used for Holi which damages our skin. We should try to make out with natural colours derived from leaves and flowers of different plants and trees. Scientifically this is necessary as this is the transition period from winter-spring-summer. This application of natural colours on our body will help in controlling the body temperature .

Sometimes the mischief-makers and eve-teasers put strong colours which do not come out after proper washing also which is a negative side of this which should be avoided.

Some people try to make the situation funny by teasing each other and say"Bura na mano Holi hai" ,"don't mind, Its Holi".
