Role of women in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar?
I need some RELIABLE resources for a critical essay due this week.I've been looking through pages and pages but can only find sites like megaessays, 123help me, and the like. I'm in an advanced English class so I can't use sources like these, but unfortunately, my school can't afford an advanced database for me to find critical papers.
I am trying to focus on the role of women/femininity in characters because Portia and Calpurnia have limited time in the play.
Any valuable resources would be extremely helpful.
The roles of woman (two) in Julius Caesar are small but important, The first time I saw the play, the 1954 film, I was disappointed that the two of my favorite actresses in it were on screen for such short times; but as I read and reread it over the years, I came to see that both have rather key parts, and when I taught the play in college, I sometimes used this as an essay question: "Show how the tragedy could have been averted if certain men had listened to their wives."
So think about it. First, Brutus is on the brink of telling Portia what's going on. A group of conspirators has just left his house late at night, and Portia comes in begging him to tell her what's on his mind that has come between them. She reminds him that, being Cato's daughter, she's a strong person and can stand almost anything. (Look up "Cato the Censor" or "Marcus Porcius Cato" for the reference, which the educated members of Shakespeare's audience would have recognized and understood.) Although Portia wasn't the daughter of THE Cato, who had lived 100 years earlier, she was likely his great-grand-daughter or possibly even his grand-daughter, and the whole family had the reputation for rigid moral uprightness. So I think that, if Brutus had told Portia what he was about to do, putting it (as he has made himself see it) in terms of a necessary sacrifice for the public good, she would have replied firmly something like "Necessary sacrifice, my eye! It's just plain murder, and you know it!" But the moment passes. Before Brutus can confide in her, one last conspirator comes to the door to add his oath to those of the others, and Brutus moves deeper into the conspiracy.
Similarly, Calpurnia almost persuades Caesar not to go to the Senate on the Ides of March. She had a dream, which turns out to have been accurately prophetic, and she's afraid for him. Of course Caesar's ego won't let him stay home because of a fearful woman's dream, but Calpurnia knows him well enough to know what emotion to play on--that very resolution on which he prides himself.. So he sums up his decision not to go: "Not that Caesar cannot, or that Caesar dare not, but that Caesar will not." (Better check the source --I may not be word for word accurate.) But when he informs the men who have come to escort him to the Senate that he has decided not to go that day, they, too, know what makes him tick, and they entice him to change his mind by telling him that the Senate plans to offer him a crown again that day. The desire to be a king overrides even his desire to impose his will, so off he goes to meet his fate.
Although most of the time in Shakespearean tragedy, men who take the advice of women make a serious mistake, in this one, Shakespeare (or maybe his main source, Plutarch) seems to be telling us that, by failing to listen to their wives, both Brutus and Caesar pass up a crucial opportunity to turn back.
One source you can use is Plutarch's Lives, which you sould be able to find in any library. Check whether the two incidents I've described are in his accounts (his short biographies of Caesar and Brutus). I'm pretty sure that Calpurnia's dream is there, but I'm not so sure about the very private scene between Brutus and Portia.
