Eczema and Bathing: What You Need To Know
If you have been recently diagnosed as having Eczema, your doctor probably will discuss the importance of proper skincare. Two of the important topics your doctor will cover are moisturizers and bathing. With bathing in particular, all eczema sufferers must proceed with caution with regard to bathing.
Since dry skin is an Eczema patient's worst nightmare, because it usually leads to another outbreak, medical professionals usually advise against prolonged bath and showers. Too many baths or showers, especially without the proper moisturizer afterwards, can lead to dry skin. .
Although most doctors will typically advise against prolonged baths and showers, they do recommend short ones. As a matter of fact, proper bathing is an effective way to treat the symptoms of Eczema because when you take a bath or shower, the body gets some much needed moisture. The important key, however, is that the moisture needs to be locked in. That's why moisturizer creams and lotions should always be applied immediately following a bath or shower.
Since the objective is to lock in moisture following a bath, there are a few steps that should be considered. We are so accustomed to drying off after a shower or bath, but you don't want to do that. Instead, use a towel to dab your body. Remove any water droplets, but don't wipe your entire body dry. Remember, the objective is to have some moisture remaining to lock in. After lightly using a towel to dry the skin, apply moisturizer lotion or cream.
In your selection of moisturizer lotions and creams, make your choice wisely. Scented lotions are nice, but they may cause an Eczema outbreak. Some of the chemicals found in scented health and beauty products can lead to skin irritation, which is what you want to avoid. It is best to opt for all-natural health and beauty products instead, or at least non-scented ones.
Some additional information about your bath or shower is to keep it short. One shower or bath a day should be enough to keep your body clean. More are not needed. Since the key is to keep the skin calm and non-irritated, you should opt for lukewarm water. Water that is too hot or cold may lead to an eczema outbreak. Soap helps to keep our body clean, but it can also remove natural oils from the skin so consider using moisturizer types of soaps. If possible, opt for all-natural products or use them sparingly, keeping the skin contact short.
Being cautious when taking a bath or a shower will certainly not cure your eczema, but it can help you manage and treat this common, yet frustrating skin condition.
