It's Party Season – but where to find the best festive frocks?
Our televisions are a great source of fashion inspiration right now. All eyes are on Cheryl Cole and Danni Minogue each Saturday and Sunday in the run up to Christmas, as they strut their stuff in their X Factor dresses. Cheryl is known for taking fashion risks, and she has not let us down thus far, highlights have been a sculptural Versace mini dress and peppy Azzaro jumpsuit. While Danni, fresh from baby making, has a sophisticated, grownup look going on, opting for designers famed for their figure flattering dresses, such as Antonio Berardi and Victoria Beckham. Neither judge is shy of dramatic hair or towering heels either – and neither should you be. Try Cheryl's long plaited style or Danni's ‘50s-inspired up-do.
And talking of fifties inspiration, it looks like no-one can resist the lure of Mad Men chic, fashion designers included. The autumn catwalks saw a flurry of fifties inspired styles, and party season is the perfect time to start rocking out in some curvy fifties frocks. This is a great look to take you from office to cocktails – which we all know is how many November and December evenings pan out. Pair your nipped-waist dress with peep toe heels and a ladylike handbag for extra style kudos. Go demure with a hint of sex appeal - subtle animal prints and patent accessories are perfect for this look, not to mention strong lip colours. Vivid red lips are particularly Joan Holloway – using a lip liner to create a beautifully pronounced shape is especially recommended.
In terms of the runway, there are a few standout trends that simply can't be ignored this party season. Red was a key colour, so it's definitely time to leave the safety of the LBD and strike a fierce pose in your LRD. You can really make your look sizzle this season with a striking scarlet, claret, ruby, pillar box or rose frock. Again, a touch of animal print makes a great addition when choosing accessories or, to make a more subtle statement, pair your red number with neutral accessories – which are less brash than the obvious black. Embellishment was also a big runway hit and sequins, beading, diamantes and studs are all popular too. Embellished dresses are deliciously festive and look great, even for daytime when worn with tights, boots and knits.
Opulent textures like lace, feathers and velvet are a sophisticated choice and add great party texture. Sumptuous fabrics, gorgeous shades, and delicate extras, make glamorous textured dresses must-haves this season. Choose a maxi length velvet one for maximum goth-glam effect or opt for a dress with a feathered bodice for a touch of costume drama. Designers in New York and Milan have fell for rich jewel tones, so women on both sides of the pond will be shining like precious stones in these wonderfully indulgent shades at Christmas. Amethyst, emerald, jade, and garnet are perfect for an elegant yet stylish party ensemble. Add black extras in gorgeous fabrics – consider a lace clutch or black velvet heels.
