A weekend in Stratford upon Avon - Part Two
Our anniversary weekend in Stratford Upon Avon continued on Sunday as we awoke to a beautiful, sunny day, just as our wedding day had been exactly one year prior. First on the day's agenda was a visit to Stratford Upon Avon Butterfly Farm, only a few minutes' walk from Alveston Manor hotel where we were staying. The park is housed in a rainforest style environment with exotic butterflies, birds and other species roaming freely around the visitors. Extra interest is added by the themed sections, such as the Caterpillar Room which houses butterflies in various stages of development, and Arachnoland, which has various spiders and scorpions in viewing tanks. The whole visit was an enjoyable and enlightening experience.
Stratford Upon Avon Butterfly Farm is located only a few steps from the banks of the river Avon, so we decided to take a romantic stroll along the riverside, taking in the relaxed atmosphere and cultural surroundings. After a while we came to a river crossing point, but in keeping with the authentic, historic feel of the town this took the form of a pedestrian chain ferry. We were led onto a floating platform which was then transported across the river, powered by our guide rotating a wheel and chain by hand. A most novel way to cross a river!
After a leisurely stroll back on the other side of the river Avon, followed by lunch, we set off for our last visit of the weekend. There are many historic attractions in Stratford Upon Avon, most of which have some connection with William Shakespeare. Although we would have loved to visit them all, one weekend just wasn't long enough. So we chose to visit just one more, and settled upon ‘Mary Arden's Farm', the childhood home of William Shakespeare's mother.
‘Mary Arden's Farm' is located a short drive from the centre of Stratford Upon Avon. After entering, visitors are free to wander around at their leisure, which made for a relaxing yet interesting afternoon. There were items of interest such as old farm machinery, birds of prey and farm animals, as well as real life characters in historic dress explaining the routines of a 16th Century farm.
What an enjoyable end to a wonderful anniversary weekend in Stratford Upon Avon. As we set off for home, we talked about what we had seen over the two days as well as what we would like to see on our next visit. With a town that has so much to offer, we knew we would be returning to Stratford Upon Avon very soon.
