If Adam and Eve were the first human beings on Earth, where and when do cave men and dinosaurs come in?
It is implied that Adam and Eve looked like you and me, and everyone else that existed in the biblical times. but apparently cave men evolved from monkeys so they resemble monkeys. I'm VERY confused & frustrated because i know that there have always been proof that cave men existed (cave art) and dinosaurs (fossils) so what's the explanation for that? Atheists are going to say that the whole Adam & Eve story is just a story, but believers: how do we explain this?
The first few chapters of Genesis are true in a metaphysical sense but not an historical sense. The sequence of events isn't even the same from one chapter to another (If you read Genesis 1 and then read Genesis 2, you will find - as has been known for millennia - that there are two creation stories). Both Judaism and Catholicism (as well as all of the mainline - some would read that "liberal" - protestant churches) understand that these are allegorical, that they describe creation metaphysically, not historically. Mainstream Islam takes a similar position by holding both the Holy Bible and Al-Qu'ran Al Kareem (the Blessed Koran) as absolutely true (albeit with qualifications regarding the Bible due to "errors" by Christians and Jews that are not relevant to your question) and yet holding that science is not in conflict with the Holy Books.
Although the roots of Young Earth Creationism have been around for at least 1,000 years, the science is much younger. Historically, neither view was widely known by the masses. The only confusion is brought by the fact that in the 19th, 20th, and 21st Centuries, both the words in the Bible and the findings of science have been widely taught to the masses without any real explanation of the orthodox views regarding what it all means. The result has been widespread rejection of either the holy stories or science, depending on the particular masses involved. The views that the Earth's age can be numbered in the thousands of years and that the creation stories are historically literal are unorthodox.
The key is understanding that "absolutely true" and "historical" are not the same thing. The word "literal" usually gets thrown in and messes everyone up. Whenever a conservative tries to use that word, ask him or her to explain what the Song of Solomon literally means.
